A little bit about where and what went on in my life at the various places I’ve lived in Milwaukee. Hope this interests you, if not – well fine.
This is the first place I’ve lived at, on Bartlett Ave. near UWM. I first moved to Milwaukee looking to get into writing for the Journal (I’ve had this Clark Kent fantasy, I guess). So, right after college I looked around Milwaukee for a place to live. I had roughly $600 and will power. I found this guy named Jerry looking for a roommate and I went down to meet with him. He was (omg!) 29! (I was 24 and I thought that was old, I know, I know). My friend Lara helped me move from Point. I lived in the attic (hot in summer!) and shared living quarters with him downstairs. After one of his many ‘friends’ stayed over once when he was gone (the police were called from a neighbor) I had enough of that and left to find somewhere a little more stable and a little more me….
(1995)
So, the 2nd place was definitely a bit more me! But, well not so stable. At the time I wanted out of the last apartment my friend Mike told me he was leaving his, too to go move to Chicago. There were 3 other roommates and everyone got along, until the one keeping the bills started overcharging everyone. Before it got too bad, I moved – everyone else moved out on the roommate a month later. I only lived there 3 months, but it was close to Downer (on Webster) and who wouldn’t want that?
(1995-1996)
This brings me to place number 3! I told my friend, Jason about my situation at Webster and he said that we should move in together, which was great. We hung out a lot anyway – dancing at La Cage every Saturday, drinking, movies, etc. It made sense. It was his mom who gave me Tuppence, my cat. Jason had 2 so, she had playmates – it was nice. Jason started dating someone seriously – - we drifted apart – - I moved….
(1996-1998)
Lara and I moved into the tippy-top of this building near Brady Street on Royall Place (get it? Royal on Royall??) heh heh. Anywho, we got along GREAT – which is interesting because I really didn’t think we would. Not as good as living with Flippy in the haunted house, but still good! Lara has been through a lot with me over the years, and I her. During this time she got a serious BF who was, well a voyeur. This was also the time I had a BF too, but it was not the best situation (I was kind of not myself – being young) and let’s just say I looked for love in all the wrong places….
(1998-1999)
Lara and her BF wanted to move in together (which was fine) and my friends Ben and Javier needed a roommate, so I went off to apartment number 5! We lived for a spell on the first floor until Javier moved a month later to Chicago. Ben and I moved upstairs and Shane, another friend, moved into the attic. It was a blast! We all did drag, went out together, made each other dinner, etc. Shane got a serious BF from Arkansas and moved away. This prompted Ben and I to move…
(1999-2001)
The 6th place was on the Lower East side on Van Buren by Buka’s… the smell of garlic potatoes during the night times were amazing! Ben and I lived there for 2 years and had a blast there. We had friends in the building too, which was nice and it was near work for me (yea!). Ben started dating his current hus-bear, Keith and they wanted to move in together so….
I moved as far away from the East Side of Milwaukee as I could. There was NO PARKING ever on the lower East side and I could not stand it! I am now in a place in Bay View with an actual parking spot!! It’s a one bedroom and I LOVE living alone!! Tuppy loves it too and you can see her in the window sometimes. This is the back view, because I don’t need stalkers
I’ve been here the longest – I think the only reason I’d move is if I found someone important (aka the love of my life) or I come into a lot of money.
Until then – this is where I am….

I enjoyed that!
Cool Beans!
Bay View does seem to be the low-rent high-culture neighborhood in Milwaukee.
We’ll see how long it lasts before it’s treated to a conversion, like the east side and the third ward.
I hear ya – nothing like gentrification….. *yawns*
